When you need repairs, renovations, or a whole new addition to your commercial or residential building, you’ll want to turn to a general contractor you can trust.

But if you don’t have much experience in this area, how do you know who to turn to?

We’re here to help! After spending years in the industry, we know what sets apart the good contractors from the great.

So without further ado, here are three things to know before hiring a general contractor in Missouri.

1. Make a list of potential contractors to work with

Start with general contractor recommendations from friends, family members, and even colleagues. You can also search for ones on your own online — a great place to look for trustworthy contractors is the National Association of the Remodeling Industry.

Make a list of ones you may want to work with. This list can be as long as you like, but aim to cut this list down to your top five to seven preferences.

2. Get in contact with each one

Once you’ve narrowed your list down, get on the phone with the remaining contracting companies. By asking them a few questions, you’ll be able to verify their legitimacy and compatibility with you and your project.

Some questions you may want to ask them include:

  • Are you able to take on new projects right now? Do you have any availability for a project like mine?
  • How many other projects would you be working on at the same time?
  • How long have you worked with your subcontractors?
  • Do you have any references we can contact?

The phone call may also give you a feel for how they treat prospective clients — after all, if they’re rude or uninterested with a potential customer, what does that have to say about their work with actual clients?

3. Compare your list of general contractors carefully

Contact a few of each contractor’s past clients to get a sense of their work style and work ethic.

When you ask for a quote from each contractor, also ask them to break down their estimated costs, down to the cost of materials, profit margins, and additional expenses like labor and taxes. Don’t forget to ask them for their estimated timeline and payment schedule for the project as well.

Be wary of contractors who ask for a large percentage of their payment upfront, as they may be having trouble with their finances or securing clients. In the same vein, avoid those that quote you at a ridiculously low price — they may cut corners and won’t be able to offer you the quality you expect in your project.
